Marfa Live Arts presents the Fire Island Opera Festival: a series of opera performances and education programs in Marfa this December 4-6, 2015. Fire Island Opera Festival commissions new one-act operas and brings revivals of forgotten gems. Their West Texas performances will converge artists from the world of opera, theater, classical music, and visual art. Artist and part-time Marfa resident Charles Mary Kubricht collaborated with Fire Island Opera Festival in New York in 2013 and 2014, and created site-specific sets for their performances including The Magic Tree, a comic opera by Christoph Willibald Gluck last performed in 1775 for Marie-Antoinette at Versailles.

Fire Island Opera’s Edwin Cahill (Artistic Director) and Bradley Moore (Music Director) are working on a series of three performances at Jett’s Grill/Hotel Paisano, Crowley Theater, and Mimms Ranch. Plans are also underway to host free voice lessons with the opera singers at the Marfa Visitors Center (former USO.) The troupe will perform a range of works that represent the broad vision and adventurous spirit of the festival in Fire Island Pines, New York with excerpts from Carmen, The Magic Tree, as well as pieces by Kurt Weill and Mozart.

Confirmed artists to date include Amy Shore-Obra, a soprano from the Metropolitan Opera and Samantha Malk a South African mezzo-soprano who has worked with the Tel Aviv Opera, Mark Morris Dance Group, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. The performances in Marfa will be produced by JD DiFabbio and Jennie Lyn Hamilton.
